Project Overview

It has been a widespread practice to convert former large industrial premises into event halls. Oftentimes, not much attention is paid to acoustic treatment during the reconstruction of such premises. They usually have large volumes, not optimal shape, and high requirements for the acoustics considering their new functional purpose.

The premise of this case is located in a separate industrial building. As part of the reconstruction, acoustic measurements were taken and solutions for the hall finishing were developed to meet the acoustic quality criteria and recommendations for halls of a similar purpose.

The special interest of such an acoustic design is coming from the need to solve a several issues. The issues in this particular case are caused by the hall's giant volume (about 120 000 m3, size is about 80x40x37 m), the fact that there are no particular places for the audience (audience is supposed to be mostly stading), and there's a big range between the minimum (800-1000 people) and the maximum (up to 5000 people) audience. Moreover, the layout of the hall varies depending on the type of event.

Project execution

Measuring reverberation time in the initial state of the hall. Conducting measurements of the noise emission in the surrounding area during the operation of sound reinforcement system (in electro-acoustic mode). Assessment of the building structure sound insulation and possible ways to improve it. Development of acoustic solutions for the hall with calculations on a computer model. Conducting acoustic control measurements in the hall.

Results

Today the hall is successfully functioning, holding concerts of popular music, conferences, exhibitions, used for filming music videos, etc. The hall provides comfortable acoustic conditions for speech and music events, despite the enormous interior volume.
